Unauthorised withdrawals from POSB/DBS accounts

SINGAPORE: Police are investigating several cases of unauthorised withdrawals from POSB and DBS Bank accounts allegedly made in Malaysia.

Some POSB and DBS Bank customers informed DBS on Wednesday that unauthorized withdrawals were made in Malaysia through their DBS/POSB ATM and debit cards.

As at 8pm Thursday, about 200 customers have informed the bank of unauthorized withdrawals. The average amount withdrawn was about S$1,000.

DBS Bank's managing director and head for consumer banking group (Singapore), Jeremy Soo, told MediaCorp that the bank de-activated the cards immediately and it is now taking steps to compensate affected customers in full.

DBS says anyone who believes that their ATM or debit cards may have been compromised should contact the bank immediately on 1800-220-1111 or visit any DBS/POSB branch.

It assures customers that they will be fully compensated for any unauthorised withdrawals within 24 hours.

DBS adds that investigations are under way and it is validating all ATM/Debit card transactions made in Malaysia over the past few days.

The bank will alert customers if they detect any unusual activity on their accounts.

One victim, 27-year-old Ms Chen, discovered something was amiss when she checked her bank account online on Wednesday night. "Some transactions done, five times. In total, about $3,000 (withdrawn)," she said.

Another affected customer, Ms Li, said an unauthorised withdrawal from her account was made from a shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Both victims decided to make a police report.

"In the police station, I actually encountered this Malay woman. She was also making this police report on an (unauthorised) withdrawal of 1,500 ringgit. Then I realized I was not the only one," said Ms Li.

According to the victims, the transactions took place in Malaysia while their ATM cards were with them safely in Singapore.

"When I called the bank, they informed me that the transaction was made in a Malaysian ATM machine. And it was withdrawn around the same time I was withdrawing my money," said Ms Lin, another victim.

400 POSB, DBS customers affected by ATM fraud

SINGAPORE: About 400 POSB and DBS Bank customers were affected by the largest ATM fraud in Singapore.

DBS on Friday said internal investigation showed that the unauthorised withdrawals were part of a card skimming operation.

The unauthorised withdrawals were made in Malaysia, with the bulk of them occurring on Wednesday.

DBS said it has identified two ATMs in Bugis Street that were compromised during a three-day period in late November last year.

Lim Sim Seng, DBS Bank's Singapore country manager, said: "During that period, there were about 2,726 customers who used the ATM there and we have reached out to all those customers already and we have blocked the cards."

It is likely that the cards were cloned during the three-day period, but the bank said there is still no conclusive evidence that a cloning device was installed.

The bank has also subsequently checked all its ATMs islandwide, and the two affected ATMs are now back in operation.

The bank added that all its ATMs have anti-skimming devices installed.

Karen Ngui, MD of group strategic marketing and communications at DBS Bank, said: "It's not a lapse in security or anything. All our ATMs are secure, our systems are fine and the incidence of skimming and cloning is something that happens all around the world.

"And so it's unfortunate that it's happened to us. But we take it very seriously; it's a responsibility we have and hence we're immediately compensating customers right away within the 24 hours."

As an added security, DBS said it will send out SMS alerts for all ATM cash withdrawals made in Malaysia.

The bank said no new unauthorised transactions have been reported so far, and it believes the situation is now contained.

But it did not rule out the possibility that a syndicate is behind the incident.

To guard against cloning, the bank said customers should change their PIN numbers frequently.

DBS said it will make full compensation to all affected customers by Friday. It expects to pay out half a million dollars in compensation.

The three victims who shared their stories with Channel NewsAsia on Thursday said they have received their compensation.

Cost of living in Singapore 2011

It’s 2011, and mainly for posterity, we’re listing down the cost of living in Singapore today. Prices are listed in Singapore dollars. To convert to your local currency, click here: http://xe.com.

Rent/Housing
Most people in Singapore live in HDBs. These are high rise apartment units built by the Housing & Development Board or HDB. There also condominiums and landed properties, but these cost more than the HDBs.

The current rent for a 3-bedroom HDB is around 2000. Each unit has a kitchen, a dining room, a living room, a shared toilet, a laundry area, and depending on the location, a balcony or a study room. There are 2 types of bedrooms: the master bedroom, which has its own toilet and bath; and the common room, which use the shared toilet.

The prices listed above were quoted as of April 2011. There have been developments since then particularly in the rent. Rent rates have gone up! The ususal 2000SGD 3-bedroom flat is now renting at 2500SGD on average. you can still get 2000 3-bedroom units though, but you will have to look hard and far. like those near the border with Malaysia. thanks to those who posted comments regarding this

People usually share the rent for the house, with the contributions divided accordingly to the type of room you have. for a 3 bedroom flat, the master bedroom usually rents for 800, and the two common rooms for 600 each. You can share a room between two or three people to save on rent. *(if one person per room is around $450 - $600, if two person then the room rents will increase until $650 - $750 per room*got air cond)

The same set-up on rent sharing goes for condos and landed properties. But you have to check with your agent on the exact terms. Some owners don’t allow room sharing, some don’t allow babies, etc.

Utilities
Cable TV and internet is usually bundled in a package, and this will cost you around 80 dollars a month. The internet is really fast here, ours is running at 26MBPS.

Electricity and Water bills are handled by the Public Utilities Board or PUB. An average PUB bill is around 200 dollars a month. This is usually divided equally among housemates in a flat. Some PUBs include the gas too. If you cook often at home, the PUB would be around 240 dollars a month. This is based on a 3 bedroom flat with air conditioned rooms.

Mobile phone bills should be around 50 on average for prepaid use. postpaid subscriptions cost a little more.

Food
Each neighborhood has a food center called ‘hawkers’. Food is cheap from the hawkers and they taste good too. Cleanliness is monitored by the government so there’s no need to worry.

An average meal in the hawkers cost around 2.50-4.00, that’s a meat and veggie combo. The famous chicken rice is around 3.00-3.50 depending on your location. It’s usually a little more expensive in the downtown areas.

Soft drink cans cost around 1.10-1.50, coffee and tea around 1.0 per cup, bottled water is around 1.0 dollar. To save on drinks, bring your own water. Tap water in the HDBs is potable.

Fast food is a little expensive. An average McDonald’s meal is around 6.0. Same goes for Burger King. Subway average meal is 7.0 dollars. Restaurants will cost you around 20 for a meal for 2.

The best way to save on food is to do your own cooking. Drop by the neighborhood markets and grocery stores. A 30 dollar budget can last you for a week, on three meals a day. And it’s a healthier choice too.

Services
A haircut costs10 - 15 dollars. Hairstyling for women cost a little more. Massage in the malls cost 40 on average.

Healthcare
Each visit to a doctor for common ailments costs around 40 dollars. Medicines included. Dental services cost around 60 dollars for basic services like cleaning and filling. Specialists would cost more of course.

Transport
Public transport is highly efficient in Singapore, and comes cheap too. Trains and buses use the same fare system. They call it EZ Link, it is a prepaid system on an RF card that you tap on every time you board and alight a train or bus. The fare for each ride depends on distance. On average it will cost you 1.30 for a one way trip. the daily expense for transport is around 5 dollars.

Taxis in Singapore have a flag down rate of 2.80, and adds on around 0.20 per kilometer. On average, taxi rides costs you around 12 dollars each trip. There are additional charges when you ride during peak hours or rush hours, thats around 7-9AM and 6-8PM. And a 50% surcharge from midnight up to 5AM.

Entertainment/Leisure
There a lot of parks around Singapore and you can spend an afternoon there for free. Each neighborhood also has community centers with swimming pools open to the public. Entrance to these public pools is just 1.0 dollar. There also public fitness gyms that cost you 2.50 per entry.

Theme parks cost a little more. Entrance to Sentosa island is 3.0 dollars. And each attraction in sentosa has separate fee. Universal Studios is around 68. The Singapore flyer costs around 30 each. The National Museum entrance is 10 dollars.

Movies cost 9.0 dollars on average. Theatre depends on the production. Some are for free, like during festivals. Books cost around 12 dollars on average.

Beer, Cigarettes
A pack of cigarettes costs around 12 dollars. A bottle of beer in bars is 12 dollars. It is cheaper to buy beer in the supermarket, would be around 18 dollars for a six pack of Tiger beer. Wine is around 19 dollars per bottle. Vodka is almost 80 dollars per liter. It would be cheaper to but these duty free at the airport. Vodka is only 25 dollars in the duty free shops.

Travel
Singapore is the best point to start exploring South East Asia. Each round trip plane ticket around SEA costs around 150 dollars on budget airlines. It could go cheaper on promos.

Clothing
A shirt in Giordano costs 15 dollars. Same goes for brands like Cotton On, Hang Ten, Bossini. Zara and Topshop cost a little more, should be around 40 per shirt. Designer goods should cost a lot more. A pair of jeans from Giordano is around 60 dollars. A pair of Levi’s costs 150 dollars.

Electronics
An IMac costs 1700. Ipad is around 700. Samsung galaxy tab is around 800. A basic DSLR is around 1000 dollars. an iPhone is around 800. A compact camera can come as cheap as 100 dollars, to as high as 800. a panasonic lumix is around 650. a canon ixus is around 400. netbooks are around 500. A Flat screen TV is around 400 for a 32 inch LCD.

Taxes
Those with annual incomes not exceeding SGD22,500.00 need not pay taxes. As a benchmark, an individual with an annual income of 30,000 has to pay 350, and those who earn 40,000 pay 900 for taxes. That’s taxes for a year. SO in case you need to pay 350, you can prepare for it by saving 29.16 dollars (350/12) every month. The IRAS, or their version of IRS, does the assessment. There will be exemptions for those with dependents etc. The PR’s or permanent residents and the citizens have an additional withheld amount. Average monthly expense
To summarize, here’s a breakdown of one person’s average monthly expenses here in singapore. We take into assumption you live in a house with 6 people, at 2 persons in a room. and you occasionally allow yourself some leisure time and shopping.

Room Rent, common room (600 / 2 persons) = 300 *$350 *air cond
PUB Share (240 / 6 persons) = 40 *normally include in room rent if you stay with the owner .
cable internet (80 / 6 persons) = 13 *$20
food and groceries, home cooking (30 x 4weeks) = 120 *$372 = $12 per day
transport (5 x 20 days, workdays only) = 100 *$70 should be enough
entertainment/leisure (100 a month) = 100
dine outs, shopping etc = 200 *$200

3 Days of I Love Anisong concert marathons presents 3D Live Hologram performance and Largest Gathering of Anisong Artists Outside of Japan
This year's AFA will see one of the largest gatherings of anisong artists ever to participate in an event outside Japan. Organisers announced a concert marathon format, with three nights worth of power-packed entertainment. The concerts will be held from 11 to 13 November 2011.
On 11 November, the concerts kick off with the Asian premiere of a "live" Hatsune Miku concert – a 3D live hologram performance accompanied by musicians on stage. Fans will be able to see a holographic 3D female character, Hatsune Miku, dance and sing on stage, just like a real-life artist. Hatsune Miku started out as computer music software developed by Crypton Future Media in Sapporo and powered by YAMAHA's VOCALOID (Vocal + Android) technology in 2007. It has since seen over 30,000 songs and movies created, and a series of fan-related activities and events.
Fans are set to also be wowed by top quality music performances from a wide repertoire of top-tier anisong artists – including iconic masters, highly popular and established artistes, and rising stars. Some of these artistes will be making their South-east Asian debut in AFA 2011.

Step by step guide to getting the I LOVE ANISONG Experience.

STEP 1
Purchase "I Love Anisong" ticket(s) through SISTIC.com.sg, from 01 October 2011 for 3 day VIP packages and from 08 October 2011 for 1 day VIP tickets, 3 day Standing packages and 1 day Standing tickets.
STEP 2
Collect "I Love Anisong" ticket(s) via SISTIC collection methods.
STEP 3
Redeem Festival+Stage ticket(s) and lightstick(s) at the dedicated "I Love Anisong" redemption counter at the venue (Check AFA website for location and opening times). The Festival+Stage tickets are in the form of wristband and are to be worn at all times.
STEP 4
Enter the festival grounds and stage area through the main entrance.

How can I collect my "I Love Anisong" Concert ticket(s)?
Please refer to the SISTIC website for modes of collection. You may choose to collect your ticket at the designated ticketing counter at the venue. Please note that the credit card that purchased the tickets and the purchaser's NRIC or passport is required as identification to collect the tickets.
Where will the collection point at the venue be and what are the opening hours?
The collection and sales point at the venue will be located outside Hall 402. The opening hours are as follows:

You can collect the Festival+Stage ticket(s) and lightstick(s) starting on 11 November 2011 at Suntec Convention Centre, Hall 402, level 4, at the "I Love Anisong" redemption counter. Please present your ticket (s) for collection of the items. Redemption timings are as follows:

Online ticket sales will be cut off the day before the concert at 10.11.11 (THU) at 1200. Sales will resume at the AFA venue outside Hall 402 at 12pm.
Will there be any on-site ticket sales for "I Love Anisong" ticket(s) on the day itself?
Tickets will be sold onsite at our "I Love Anisong" ticketing counter in Suntec Exhibition & Convention Hall 402 on all three days. Ticket sales timings are as follows: Redemption timings are as follows:

12.11.11 (SAT) – 9am to 8pm

What payment method can I choose for on-site ticket purchase?
For on-site "I Love Anisong" ticket purchases, payment via cash, credit and NETS will be accepted.
If I am not available to collect my concert pass and light stick on 11 November 2011, can I collect the items on the event days?
Yes. You may collect the items on the event days as well. You may collect your tickets.
What time will the concerts start?
All I Love Anisongs concerts will start at 7pm on all days and doors will open at 6pm.
Am I allowed to take pictures or record videos during the concert?
All recording devices, inclusive of sound and visuals, are strictly prohibited. We reserve the right to remove those caught doing so from the hall without refund.
I have booked "I Love Anisong" concert ticket(s) outside of Singapore; can I collect my tickets during the event day at the event venue?

Will there be an opportunity to get an autograph to the "I Love Anisong"Artistes?
Yes. However, only I Love Anisong Concert VIP ticket holders will stand a chance to get autographs.

SMRT Makan Session with Ieatishootipost!!!(Farrer Road MRT)

Thanks for Nuffnang(sg) for given a chance for attend SMRT Makan Session with the famous food blogger in Singapore Dr.Leslie Tay (http://ieatishootipost.sg/) last Saturday 29^th October 2011 at Farrer Road (Farrer Road Circle Line MRT Station). This event is held by SMRT and Nuffnang for celebration of the Circle Line network completion. This time Dr.Leslie introduce us the main dish of this event is the famous Kong Bak Pau at Singapore. Here the simple introduce of this dish from Dr.Leslie blog . This Kong Bak Pau is still very much the same deal as it was when it was first introduced by Westlake in 1976. Three families are involved in making this one dish and they have been doing it together for the last 30 years or so. The first family are of course the Lims who are the owners of the restaurant. Its founder, Mr Lim Tong Law started Westlake in the early 70's because of his love for cooking. He was a PE teacher at Chinese High School at the time and was in his fifties when he dreamt of running a restaurant so that he can give the public a chance to try his dishes. When he started Westlake, he was still teaching at Chinese High and had to shuttle between two jobs! Business began to really pick up when the Kong Bak Pau was introduced which eventually became the iconic dish for Westlake.

It was during those early days when Mr Lim was sourcing for ingredients for his Kong Bak Pau that he met with our second family, the Loos. The Loos play a very important role in the Kong Bak Pau because they produce the most important ingredient that gives the braised pork its characteristic flavour -- premium Dark Soy Sauce. Over the years, the Loos have been constantly supplying the Lims with Dark Soy Sauce, preserving the same recipe as before.

Braised Pork Belly

Now we come to the third family, the Ohs. The Ohs are a 3rd generation master baker of Pau Skin. When you eat Kong Bak Pau at Westlake, you know that there is something very special about the Pau Skin that you can't find anywhere else. That is because the Ohs have been supplying Westlake with the same Pau Skin that is made with the traditional method of adding lye water (kee zhui) and using yeast instead of baking powder as the raising agent. Lye water makes the dough alkaline and when flour is subjected to alkaline conditions, it becomes more springy. Incidentally, lye water is the ingredient that differentiates Chinese noodles from Italian pasta. Whereas Chinese noodles are springy because of the addition of lye water, Italian pasta tends to be more toothy. Nowadays, not many bakers use lye water in their recipes, but they continue to make the Pau Skin the same way just for Westlake.

Now when it comes to braised pork, there are many methods of cooking it. The easiest way is simply to simmer the pork belly in braising sauce. However, if you want to make an exceptional braised pork that has that soft fat layer and a skin which is tender, then it needs to go through several steps. At Westlake, the pork is first boiled, then dipped in braising sauce before being deep fried, after which it is cut into bun sized slices before being marinated in braising sauce. Then when you order the braised pork, one serving portion is freshly steamed and served with the buns. The whole process of making the braised pork takes 6 to 8 hours!
